The O’Jays

Some records bring back a memory before the first verse even starts. The O’Jays’ Back Stabbers belongs in that conversation. Released in 1972 and produced by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, the album brought together its unforgettable title track and “Love Train”—two songs approaching human relationships from very different directions. One sounded the alarm about betrayal; the other invited people to come together. That emotional range makes the album a rewarding stop for this week’s TRACK WIRE Rewind. Start with “Back Stabbers,” then let the album play. Its blend of sophisticated arrangements and emotionally charged material captures the appeal of classic soul: music that can move a room while giving listeners something to think about. For emerging artists, our takeaway is the value of a clear message. A memorable song gives its audience a feeling, a situation, or a story they can carry into their own lives. The O’Jays offer a reminder that polished presentation and meaningful subject matter can share the same groove.
